Two-factor authentication

how to enable two-factor authentication on your account, which apps to use, and what to do if you lose your phone.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra check when logging into Fold, on top of your password: a 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds, generated by an app on your phone.

Enabling it

From Account › Security, with your password, Fold gives you a secret key to add to an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, 1Password, or similar — any app that supports the standard behind this kind of code will work). Enter the 6-digit code that app gives you to confirm it's set up correctly, and it's enabled.

Recovery codes

When you enable it, Fold gives you 10 single-use recovery codes, in case you ever lose access to the app (for example, if you switch phones). Each one works exactly once, and they're never shown again after that — save them somewhere safe as soon as you get them.

If you run out, or want a fresh set, you can generate new recovery codes from the same screen; the old ones stop working.

Logging in with 2FA enabled

After your password, Fold will ask for the 6-digit code from your app or, if you don't have it on hand, one of your recovery codes.

Turning it off

You can disable it at any time from Account › Security, with your password. From then on, logging in only requires the password.

A security note

Every time two-factor authentication is turned on or off for your account, you get an email. If either of those happens and it wasn't you, change your password right away and reply to that email.

Closing other sessions

From the same Security screen you can see your account's open sessions and close all of them except the one you're currently using — for example, if you suspect someone else has logged in with your credentials.
